The repetition of ‘down to earth’ creates a gentle and soothing sound and indeed, is incredibly atmospheric. The fourth track ‘Infinity’ is simplistic but beautiful, with minimal instrumental and gentle lyrics. The subsequent tracks are mostly love songs, all with rather mournful tones this certainly isn’t the kind of cheery pop of ‘What Makes You Beautiful’. After this are the two released singles, ‘Drag Me Down’ and ‘Perfect’, which I think are two of the strongest tracks on the album. However, after a while the repetition of ‘hey angel’ does feel a little excessive and you might find it gets on your nerves quite quickly. It has a strong drum beat throughout and some rather effective vocals.
The album starts with ‘Hey Angel’, which is catchy and bright. Still, for the most part this album feels different and I would perhaps venture, better, than what came before. Despite the more sorrowful tracks though, there are a couple of their trademark cheeky and cheesy love songs. It does feel like a response to losing Zayn Malik, growing up and to the many relationships they’ve had during the last five years. Consequently, this album feels like the band is very aware of where they are in life. However, this album is a tad more serious than their previous offerings and certain tracks (notably ‘Drag Me Down’) have an air of defiance. This has left legions of devoted fans disappointed, with others grateful they don’t have to hear One Direction’s latest chart topper every time they go shopping.
